Kommentar/Beschreibung

The English language manifests itself in different varieties that depend on a number of contextual and situational parameters. On the one hand, there are user-related varieties, which are based on the origin of the speaker with respect to region (dialects) or social group (sociolects). On the other hand, use-related varieties are associated with the variables of ‘field of discourse’ (topic under discussion), ‘medium’ (spoken/written), and ‘attitude’ (stylistic levels of formality). We will discuss different varieties of English (such as Pidgin English, Cockney, legal English or journalese) at the levels of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, investigating authentic fictional and non-fictional texts.
