See the module description for more information; or simply email me and I can provide further information. A course reader is available, have a look inside it to get a feeling for the lessons. Classroom time will be spent investigating ideas in small group and whole class discussion. Various media (including documentary and film, photography, children’s literature, art) will be used to introduce topics. The content of this course will be of particular interest to students of teacher training, social work, educational science, social science, and cultural studies. Topics covered: • What is in a word: Bildung and education • What is educational sociology? • Key developments in educational sociology • Critical pedagogies • Child-centred approaches • Migration, race and education • Gender and education • Intelligence, selection, and testing • Disability and education • Social class, social reproduction and education • Learning from comparative education • Education policy |
