Lernorganisation Regular Attendance and Active Participation
Your regular attendance and active participation is essential for this class.
Weekly (Reading) Assignments
Weekly (reading) assignments will be given to wrap up classes or prepare upcoming classes (see schedule). The obligatory literature has to be read and prepared by all students (literature will be provided on Stud.IP). Everybody has to complete the assignments.
Literature and materials will be provided on Stud.IP.
Everyone (presentation group and class): Please have the session materials (articles, notes) ready on your gadget (notebook, tablet, smartphone) or on your desk so you may refer to it in the discussion.
In-Class Presentation (Group work)
1 Based on authentic content material, you will develop and present a worksheet (plus extra material, such as media (visuals, audios, etc.), differentiation material, expectation catalogue, etc.) for your learners at intermediate EFL-level (Sek I). The students will discuss this after presentation, and – based on our didactic readings – explain when, how and why your worksheet is appropriate to be used. Pay also attention to the differentiation material (both Leistungs-/ Neigungsdifferenzierung) complementing the regular task.
2 In relation to our class literature syllabus you should think about the following questions:
- Which features make your task a „good“ task? Why?
- Which particular approach / method does your task represent? How?
- How does your task support the student(s) in accomplishing the objective you set?
- How does the use of the task allow for differentiation?
- What is critical about the task?

ORGANISATION
- Form groups of max. 3 students. You will work together as “buddy group” throughout the term, preparing the assignments for the weekly obligatory reading material together, and cooperating in the presentation. In the second half of the term, you will also support another group in their presentation.
- Each group will give a presentation of 20 mins duration. An extra 10 mins will be devoted for questions, discussions and feedback.
- The presentation itself is ungraded, but essential part of the graded Modulprüfungsleistung.
- You should make use of media (e.g. PPT, audios, videos) to support your presentation. The presentation should be an appealing and easy to follow introduction to your worksheet and its tasks.

DEADLINES
- Upload your presentation and all accompanying materials on Stud.IP the Friday BEFORE you present (by 11:00Uhr at the latest!).
(Example: If you present “your” bridging task on Tuesday 1st June 2021 you need to upload your presentation and all accompanying materials on Stud.IP by Friday 18th May 2021 by 11:00Uhr (at the latest!)).
- Our online session on 1st June will support you in selecting content material for your task (your own suggestions welcome!) and help getting organized with your group members.
- You will present your worksheets (online) on 08th June, 15th June, 22th June, 29th June and 6th July 2021.
Leistungsnachweis Written Assignment (Individual work)
1 In the introductory part of the paper you briefly address the topic of tasks and their relation to approaches, methods and cognitive processes, as well as differentiation, in the context of foreign language learning and teaching. What are the challenges for the learners (in which learning year), why do you suppose the content material to be stimulating?
2 Integrate readings to outline reasons for the choice of your worksheet: i.e., what are criteria that make the task appealing to the students and relevant to support their language learning progress.
3 In relation to theory, you describe “your” worksheet (including the differentiation material) and how your learning scenario allows for development of the children’s/students’ foreign language competences and skills.
4 The following exemplarily questions provide further “food for thought”:
- Which features make yours a “good” worksheet? Why?
- Which aspects of language learning does your task/s support? How? Explain with reference to the expectation catalogue.
- How does your material support the student(s) in accomplishing the objectives you set?
- What may be critical about the worksheet and the task?
- …

Kommentar/Beschreibung

What do we mean by “student-orientation” when we design EFL lessons? Why is it important to have a solid command of a variety of language learning strategies, with their different approaches and methods? On the level of secondary education, this opens up a wide spectrum of formats how to engage EFL learners actively in their learning process (and progress). Apart from discussing elementary concepts essential for planning tasks and lessons in English, we will discuss the implications of a range of foreign-language teaching approaches, and examine their different task designs and objectives.
